Home to the Indus valley society and a region of momentous trade routes and vast empire, the Indian subcontinent was branded with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. India is a federal constitutional republic governed under a parliamentary system consisting of 28 states and 7 union territories. India is a pluralistic, multilingual and mixed society. It is also home to a variety of wildlife in a variety of protected habitats. On the Indian Ocean, it is also closest to the island nations of the Maldives on the southwest, Sri Lanka on the south, and Indonesia on the southeast. India is the second most populous country in the world, with a population of over one billion, and is the seventh largest country by geographical area and so two other names for India less known outside India, Bharat and Hindustan.
